The Knowledge Exchange has shared the Scottish Government’s new Learning for Sustainability (LfS) Action Plan.

Read about the context behind the new plan, including the initial development of the term ‘Learning for Sustainability’, which was coined in Scotland in the early 2010s and has since gained traction in other countries as a cross-curricular approach which enables learners, educators, learning settings and their wider community to build a socially just, sustainable and equitable society.

The Action Plan presents five ‘Vision 2030 Goals’:

  • All learners should have an entitlement to LfS;
  • Every practitioner, school and education leader should demonstrate LfS in their practice;
  • Every setting should have a robust whole setting approach to LfS;
  • All settings’ buildings, grounds and policies should support LfS;
  • A strategic national approach to supporting LfS should be established.

The Action Plan sets out 25 specific action points, based around five key themes: leadership and collaborative partnership; curriculum, learning, teaching and assessment; learning environment and resources; learner voice, choice and action; meaning and understanding.
