This UK Government webpage provides valuable summary statistics as headline findings on the ‘Children’s People and Nature Survey’ carried out by English Nature.

It provides information on how children and young people in England experience and think about the natural environment. Any changes in trends between 2021 and 2022 are noted. This includes data on time and the types of places children visit outdoors.

You can also find information here on the People and Nature Survey for England (PANS), led by Natural England. This is one of the main sources of data on how people experience and think about the environment, in England. Further detail on the questionnaires used can be seen here.

In Scotland, NatureScot’s Teaching, learning and play research reports on the location, duration and focus of outdoor learning sessions. It compares these with 2014 and 2006 and suggests a goal for outdoor learning time in primary schools. Find  key recommendations for increasing practitioner confidence and enhancing provision of outdoor learning in early learning and childcare settings and primary schools.  The research highlights that extra support is needed in areas of multiple deprivation and highlights the benefits of learning in green and natural places.
