Children in Scotland (15 July 2025) share the news of the first anniversary of the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024, which cemented the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into Scots law.
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1989 and is made up of 54 articles that set out the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights that apply to every child, as well as the responsibilities that adults and governments have to ensure children and young people have access to these rights.
This includes Article 29 (goals of education): Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.
