Description
The 2025 Scottish School Grounds Survey was commissioned by NatureScot, Play Scotland and Learning Through Landscapes. The survey was led by Professor John McKendrick.
Over 1,000 schools across all 32 local authority areas in Scotland voluntarily participated. This survey replicates a similar study conducted 20 years ago. This offers a unique, long-term view of how school grounds have evolved.
The 2025 survey included questions relating to nature and climate, and use of grounds for outdoor learning.
Findings included that 38% of schools have fewer than five trees, limiting opportunities for nature connection. Climate change is already affecting school grounds with schools are reporting increased flooding, overheating, and high winds that restrict outdoor use.
The 2025 survey results evidence the need for stronger guidance and better resources to support schools to get the most from their grounds. School grounds have a key role to play in children’s ability to learn, play, exercise and connect with nature.
