Description

Accredited by SQA at SCQF level 5 | 5-8 credits | Delivered in Secondary Schools

This comprehensive qualification will give pupils a solid understanding of peatlands – which make up >20% of Scotland – and how they influence the land, water, and climate around us. Working on and restoring peatlands is a growing sector with the government committing to restore 400,000 hectares by 2040 in the recent draft climate change plan.

Scotland’s peatlands release over 15% of the country’s greenhouse gases, second only to transport. As efforts to restore Scotland’s peatlands ramp up, we know there will be a need for more skilled workers, alongside further resources to support efforts to turn these important landscapes back into a natural carbon sink.

This qualification is designed to complement Environmental Sciences and Rural Skills, ideal for S4-S6s interested in the environment or working on the land as a farmer, machine contractor, conservationist, or ecologist.

This Award was developed thanks to Peatland ACTION funding.
