This study investigated inequalities in heritage site distribution across Scotland using area-based and individual GPS measures. It was carried out by researchers at MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences, University of Glasgow in collaboration with Historic Environment Scotland
Findings showed that poorer areas had significantly fewer heritage sites, and children from these areas had contact with fewer sites daily.
The need to enhance heritage access in poorer areas was emphasised. Recommendations include prioritising economic investment in heritage near deprived areas, providing subsidised travel/free entry for those on low incomes, and increasing heritage awareness of local communities and young people through cultural and educational outreach activities.
