The BIEA STEM 2025 Competition, Feast Forward – Cultivating Change for the Planet, challenges young innovators to rethink the origins of our food. Traditionally, food programmes and competitions have focused on the art of cooking—how food is prepared and its taste. However, Feast Forward shifts the focus to the ingredients themselves. Our “Food Champion” of the future is not just a master chef but a champion of sustainable, nutritious, and environmentally responsible food sourcing.
Agriculture today faces a range of challenges that threaten food production and sustainability. Methane emissions from livestock contribute significantly to climate change, while water shortages affect crop yields worldwide. Soil degradation and pests are reducing arable land, making it harder to grow enough food for a rapidly expanding global population. Advances in gene editing offer potential solutions to improve crop resilience, but ethical concerns remain. Addressing these challenges is crucial to ensuring food security and a sustainable future.
