This Child of the North report (Powell, Lauren; Spencer, Sarah; Clegg, Judy (eds)) published 2024 is available on the internet.
The report looks at UK pre-school education support for children. It applies seven principles: putting children first; addressing inequity; adopting place-based approaches; working together effectively across public services; putting education at the heart of public service delivery; establishing universities as the research and development departments for local public services; and using and sharing information across public service providers effectively.
The report references Scottish legislation to put children first (Getting it Right for Every Child) and to outdoor play and learning.
It cites evidence which suggests that less than 10% of two to four-year-olds are meeting the recommended 180 minutes of daily physical activity and one in five UK children are overweight or obese by the age of five years old.
